How to Make Delicious Sweet Licorice Root Tea

Licorice root tea is an herbal infusion made from the roots of the Glycyrrhiza Glabra plant, which is native to Southern Europe.

Licorice root (or liquorice root), sometimes called sweet root has a long history of use in traditional medicine in Assyrian, Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian cultures and is possibly the most used herb in alternative medicines.

The tea has a sweet and slightly woody taste and is often used as a natural remedy for various health issues, as well as a flavoring or sweetener.

Why is Licorice Root Tea Gaining Popularity

In recent years, licorice root tea has gained popularity due to its many supposed health benefits, such as its ability to soothe digestive issues, boost immunity, relieve sore throat and cough, and help manage stress and anxiety, and its anti-inflammatory properties.

Additionally, this tea is caffeine-free, making it a good alternative to coffee or traditional tea.

The tea’s popularity can also be attributed to its versatility, as it can be consumed hot or cold and mixed with other herbs and spices to create unique flavors.

Health Benefits of Licorice Root Tea

Although some recent studies have been done on the health benefits of licorice root, there is not as yet enough scientific evidence to show that it improves or contributes to the treatment of health conditions.

However, since this root has been used holistically for centuries there is ample anecdotal evidence of the effects of licorice root.

Some of these benefits include the following:

  1. Soothes digestive tract issues: Licorice root tea may help to improve digestive health and relieve symptoms of gastrointestinal problems like acid reflux, heartburn, upset stomach, peptic ulcers, and other stomach problems, promoting healthy digestion.
  2. Boosts immunity: This herbal tea may help to boost the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells and promoting the activity of immune cells.
  3. Relieves sore throat and cough: Licorice tea may help to relieve a sore throat due to its anti-inflammatory and demulcent properties.
  4. Hormonal Balance: Licorice root may help to regulate hormone levels in the body, particularly in women, and can help to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) as well as menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.
  5. Respiratory system: It may have expectorant properties, which can help loosen phlegm and relieve coughing and other respiratory problems. It may also aid in the treatment of respiratory infections.

To minimize the risk of side effects and complications, it is important to consume this herbal tea in moderation and get medical advice before adding it to your diet, especially if you have underlying medical conditions or take any medication.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid licorice root tea due to its potential effects on hormone levels.

How to Prepare Licorice Root Tea

The best way to prepare this tea is to use the sliced root of the licorice plant but you can also purchase licorice root tea bags for convenience. Whenever possible, try to purchase organic licorice root.

Licorice root tea is delicious on its own but it is a versatile herb that works well with other ingredients added. Try adding cinnamon sticks, orange peel, ginger, cloves, juniper berries, or your other favorite roots or herbs to the tea as it steeps.
