Angelica Root Tea

Angelica root tea is made from the dried roots of the Angelica plant, a perennial herb that grows in moist soils in Europe, Asia, and North America. 

The roots are harvested when they are about 3-4 years old. The roots are sometimes dried and can be steeped in hot water to make tea or used in medicine.

What is Angelica Root?

There are many species of angelica but the most commonly used are angelica archangelica ( A. archangelica ) and angelica sinensis (A. sinensis).

Angelica archangelica is a northern European variety also known as wild celery, garden angelica, or masterwort among others.

The most commonly used angelic in traditional Chinese medicine is angelica sinensis also known as dong quai. This variety grows mainly in China, Japan, and Korea.

While angelica tea is mainly derived from the dried root, all parts of the angelica plant can be used in herbal medicine including angelica seeds, flowers, young leaves, and stems.

Essential oil from the angelica plant is used for medicinal uses, perfume, and as a flavoring in cooking as well as other culinary uses. Angelica oil has also been used to flavor liqueurs.

Angelica Root Tea Recipe

Here’s a simple recipe to make angelica root tea at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon dried angelica root
  • 2 cups water
  • Honey or lemon (optional)

Instructions:

  • Rinse the dried angelica root thoroughly under cold water.
  • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a small pot.
  • Add the dried angelica root to the boiling water.
  • Reduce the heat and let the tea simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
  • After simmering, turn off the heat and let the tea steep for another 5 minutes.
  • Strain the tea into a cup using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
  • If desired, add honey or lemon for flavor.
  • Enjoy your warm and soothing angelica root tea.
